Three books by Saint Bonaventure bound together. The texts are co-authored by Ioanne Balaino and published in Venice, 1574. The commentaries encompass an enlightening exegesis of the gospel of Luke and the Lamentations of Jeremiah in the Book of Wisdom.
The professor of theology, or the Magister, had the main responsibility of delivering lectures on biblical texts. Apart from the aforementioned Commentary on the Gospel of St. Luke, Bonaventure’s texts also included a lecture on Ecclesiastes (Commentarius in Ecclesiasten), and one on St. John’s Gospel (Commentarius in Ioannem).
The prologue to the Commentary on the Gospel of Luke is particularly interesting for its in-depth view of the master-pupil relationship, which was one of the central topics of Bonaventure’s philosophy and pedagogy.
The authorship of the Commentary on the Book of Wisdom, titled In librum Sapientiae, has been questioned and is no longer considered one of Bonaventure’s works. Similarly, the Commentary on Lamentations, previously attributed to Bonaventure, was likely written by John Peckam. However, there is a possibility that some authentic commentaries by Bonaventure have been lost.
