***
The play Fire and Night (Uguns un Nakts) was composed in 1903 and 1904 by Jānis Rainis. The theme comes from Latvian folklore. especially emphasizing the legend of the Bearslayer (Lāčplēsis). Text of the play was first published in 1905 in the monthly magazine Home Visitor (Mājas Viesa Mēnešraksts). Two years later the book with this title came out. The plot was based on Pumpurs’ epic poem Bearslayer (Lāčplēsis), to whom Rainis gave deeper dimensions by talking for the first time about Latvia as a country. The drama Fire and Night has been translated into Estonian, English, French, Russian, and Belarus languages.
