Pietro Giannone was the first to deal systematically with the question of Church and State, which led to a lifelong conflict between Giannone and the Roman Catholic Church. In his Posthumous works, Pietro defended his most famous work Istoria Civile del Regno di Napoli which was put in Index Librorum Prohibitorum by the Roman Inquisition.
The Index Librorum Prohibitorum (English: List of Prohibited Books) was a list of publications deemed heretical, anti-clerical, or lascivious, and therefore banned by the Catholic Church. The list aimed to protect the faith and morals of the faithful by preventing the reading of heretical and immoral books.
