Beautiful edition of History of 19th-century painting written by German art historian Richard Mutter, in Russian language and published in Saint Petersburg. Two of three volumes. Illustrated with beautiful plates and full-page illustrations in black and white. This great work was translated into several languages and enjoyed a great reputation abroad.
In his book, Muther sought to give a concise and clear outline of the key points in the development of art from the end of the eighteenth century to the modern end of the XIX century. Muther’s advantage lay in the fact that he had far more sources for writing work than historians of earlier times. The author considers not only the European but, for example, the art of Japan or America. However, Russian art is not presented in the three-volume edition.
