Manuel Bartlett Vintage Photo
Manuel Bartlett, a prominent Mexican politician who has held various high-level positions, including Secretary of the Interior during the 1980s and later head of Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), has long been a controversial figure. His name has been linked by former DEA agents and investigative journalists to the 1985 abduction, torture, and murder of DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena.
At the time of Camarena’s killing, Bartlett was Secretary of the Interior, overseeing law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Allegations suggest he may have played a role in either facilitating or covering up the crime, which was carried out by members of the Guadalajara Cartel, possibly with the knowledge or complicity of corrupt officials. However, Bartlett has consistently denied any involvement, and no formal charges have been brought against him. The case remains a symbol of deep-rooted corruption and strained U.S.–Mexico relations in the ongoing war on drugs.
Over the years, several former DEA officials have publicly stated that high-ranking Mexican government figures, including Bartlett, were either complicit in or deliberately turned a blind eye to cartel activities. These claims were further fueled by investigative documentaries and leaked government documents, which suggest that Camarena had uncovered links between drug traffickers and certain political elites. Despite growing calls for accountability and further investigation, the Mexican government has remained largely silent on the matter. This silence continues to raise suspicions and erode public trust in official narratives.
