Johann Jakob Scheuchzer (2 August 1672 – 23 June 1733) was a Swiss physician and natural scientist from Zürich. He is best known for his significant work, Physica Sacra, spanning four volumes, which combined biblical commentary with his perspective on the natural world, showcasing a harmonious blend of scientific inquiry and religious interpretation.
This is one of many illustrations from this work, which quickly became famous as the Kupfer-Bibel or “Copper Bible.”
Job 6:5: Does a wild donkey bray when it has grass, or an ox bellow when it has fodder?
Description: In Job 6:5, Job is responding to his friends’ attempts to comfort him amidst his suffering. He uses the analogy of animals to express that complaints and cries arise from distress and need. Just as a wild donkey does not bray when it has grass and an ox does not bellow when it has fodder, Job suggests that his complaints are justified due to his severe and unmet needs.
