Emperor Charles VII Portrait
Original Antique Copperplate Engraving Of Carol Albert Elect. Bav. Princeps. ( Charles VII, Holy Roman Emperor)
***
Beautiful antique copperplate engraving showing a portrait of Charles VII, Holy Roman Emperor and Prince Elector of Bavaria. This print is part of the series of large interconnected albums containing engraved portraits and engravings from the cabinet formed by Louis-Philippe, Duke of Orleans, and the French king.
The constitution albums spread over twenty-five years and were kept at the Palais Royal. Of the 114 volumes it keeps track of, 75 are now kept in Versailles which contain only 65 prints. The albums were then kept in Anjou mansion, near Brussels, in the collection of Henri d’Orléans Count of Paris, and then, when in 1948 the prince and his family left Belgium to settle in Portugal, volumes were put in public sale in Brussels. At the request of Charles Mauricheau-Beaupré, the Count of Paris agreed to withdraw volumes and sold them at Versailles for 1.2 million francs.
