A Flower Piece – In the Cabinet at Houghton
***
Jan van Huysum grew up in a family of botanical artists but chose to work independently. He was known for his excellent sense of composition and kept his methods secret, leaving historians unsure about how he created his works.
Richard Earlom was a skilled English engraver who worked for John Boydell, a print and bookseller in London. Earlom made 27 plates for “The Houghton Gallery,” a two-volume series that featured 162 paintings from Sir Robert Walpole’s estate. This mezzotint is one of the plates from the series.
