 Original Devil Sketch

Original sketch of Devil or Satan (Lucifer), done by the Yugoslavian cartoonist Milorad Dobric

***

This hand drawing of the Devil with a goat head is not signed and dated but it comes from the period between 1950 and 1960. It was drawn by Milorad Dobric, the famous Serbian cartoonist and a restorer of comics in Serbia after the Second World War. He studied architecture but his beloved hobby was cartooning, which became his profession in 1945. In 1950 he got a job as a political cartoonist on the humor weekly Jež in Belgrade.

He soon became one of the top cartoonists in his field in Yugoslavia. Dobric wrote and illustrated his first published comic book ‘Veliki Turnir’ in 1951. In 1952 he created ‘Pera Pesak’, a popular comic strip, and in 1954 he created the pantomime gag strip ‘Ljuba Truba’. Later work by Dobric includes the daily comic strip ‘Kurir Fica’ and two very successful comic strips ‘Slavuj Glisa’ and ‘Inspektor Zuca’.
