(Half reactive stratospheric aircraft) – In Russian language.

***

Rare edition of one of Tsiolkovsky’s scientific work. Book is explaining the structure of specialized aircraft intended to fly to the stratosphere. Along with the French Robert Esnault-Pelterie, the German-Romanian Hermann Oberth and the American Robert H. Goddard, Tsiolkovsky is considered to be one of the founding fathers of modern astronomy, rocketry and astronautics.

The present work is one of the later works of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. The drawings in the book represent a plan for a semi-reactive stratoplan: the first image is a projection of a plane, the second and the fourth are a side view in a section of the same while, the third is a top view of the entire section. Experiments in the theory of aviation and experimental work on aerodynamics led Tsiolkovsky to the idea of the possibility of building a jet engine, but this task seemed extremely time-consuming and demanding large investments. The development of rockets could not be conducted alone, so the inventor came to the conclusion that the first steps in the implementation of this dream could be the development of a semi-active engine for an airplane.

Intensive improvement of aviation equipment should lead, in the opinion of KE Tsiolkovsky, to an increase in the speed of aircraft. This problem seemed difficult due to air resistance in the lower layers of the atmosphere. From the available data, it was concluded that the output into the stratosphere would allow the aircraft to reduce the resistance of the medium and, at the expense of a smaller amount of fuel, develop several times faster speed. The increase in the power of the aircraft engine was to be achieved due to the use of combustion products and the enhancement of their output. Because of the nature of the environment in which it was supposed to fly, the design was conceived to be airtight. The work contains some general calculations, and “minor details are eliminated” in order to better understand the structure and operation of the projectile. The last pages of the book contain reviews of previous works of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, excerpts from the book by Professor NA Rynin, along with Tsiolkovsky who participated in the “Section of Interplanetary Communications” Osoaviahima of the USSR, containing extremely flattering reviews about the inventions of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, newspaper articles and correspondence of the scientist.
