Antique Commonplace Book
***
An antique commonplace book written in Serbian, German, French, and Latin. It contains a collection of quotes, commentaries, and personal notes on various texts, ranging from the works of Marcus Aurelius and Shakespeare to political writings on socialism in Berlin, officer duties, commandments, medicine and poems. Interestingly, the back of the front panel bears the motto “Mensch ärgere Dich nicht” (English: Man, Don’t Get Angry), which is also the name of a German board game that was developed around 1907/8. Other than a newspaper cutout that appears to be from around 1900, there are no further indications of a 20th-century date within the notebook.
Size: 15cm x 9cm
Date: [1880-1910]
Binding: Hardcover, blind-stamped, worn along the edges, bumped edges, spine cover and spine extremes missing (2,5cm;3cm), spine partially exposed.
