Novel Mernieku Laiki (Time of Surveyors) is the first realistic novel in the Latvian language written by the brothers Reinis and Matīss Kaudzīte, teachers from Vecpiebalga, with illustrations by Eduards Brencēns in 18791. It tells about life in the province of Livonia at the end of the 19th century, at the time of the redistribution of land from the large German landowners instituted by Alexander II of Russia. The novel was brought to the screen by Voldemārs Pūce in 1968. In 2009. the Bank of Latvia issued a 1 Lats commemorative coin for the 130th anniversary of the publication of the novel. The novel is part of the Latvian Cultural Canon.
