Serbian Civil Code of Laws
***
The Serbian Civil Code of Laws is the most important, most famous, and longest-lived Serbian legal act in recent history. Adopted on 25 March 1844, it was the third Code in Europe after the French and Austrian Code. According to the major opinion, the Serbian Civil Code of Laws is a shortened version of the Austrian Civil Code of Laws.
The work on creating the Serbian Civil Code of Law was initiated by Prince Milos Obrenovic, who, with the help of the Austrian authorities, hired a lawyer and writer Jovan Hadžic to develop the Civil Code of Law. This particular copy is filled with pen, pencil, and ink inscriptions clarifying law acts and referencing clarifications to the other law books. The ink inscription on the title page suggests that the book was the property of Belgrade District Court.
