“Les ruines, ou Méditations sur les révolutions des empires” (The Ruins, or Meditations on the Revolutions of Empires):
This book explores the rise and fall of empires throughout history. Volney uses vivid descriptions and philosophical reflections to draw parallels between different empires and analyze the causes of their decline. It emphasizes the universal laws governing the lifespan of empires, delving into both external and internal factors that contribute to their downfall.
“La loi naturelle, ou Catéchisme du citoyen français” (Natural Law, or Catechism of the French Citizen):
In this work, Volney discusses political philosophy, ethics, and the principles of governance. Aimed at educating French citizens about civic duty, morality, and the understanding of natural laws, the book offers guidance on various aspects of citizenship and societal principles. It serves as a practical guide for citizens to navigate their roles in society based on the concept of natural law.
“L’Histoire de Samuel” (The History of Samuel):
“L’Histoire de Samuel” is a historical and philosophical work by Volney. Inspired by the biblical story of Samuel, it explores themes such as political leadership, the role of religion in society, and the cyclical nature of history. Volney uses the narrative of Samuel to provide insights into power dynamics, the consequences of human actions, and the broader implications for society. The work blends historical analysis with philosophical reflections, drawing lessons from the biblical account.
