This rare Italian translation of the influential theological work “Ejercicio de perfección y virtudes cristianas” was first published in Seville in 1609. The work is based on material the author gathered for his spiritual exhortations to his brethren and was published at the request of his superiors. Although originally intended for the author’s religious community, it was also meant to benefit and edify other religious individuals and laypeople alike.
About the book
The book deliberately avoids the more abstract realms of mysticism and complex theological speculation, focusing instead on practical guidance for cultivating the virtues essential to a perfect Christian life, whether within a religious community or in the world. The work quickly gained popularity and remained in widespread use by all classes of Christians, especially those in religious life, until the era of Vatican II. Over twenty-five editions of the original Spanish text have been published, along with numerous extracts and abridgments.
