This book recounts the career and composes the memoirs of Baron de Tott, a French officer stationed in Turkey who lived among the Turks for 23 years. This is the first work that objectively depicts the Ottoman nation and the Turks. Montesquieu, in the preface, the author also affirms the importance of knowing and speaking the language of a people, and the need to beware of his European prejudices to describe the morals and institutions of the Turks, which had never before been done. Many dialogues between the Baron and certain lords can be fascinating for those wanting to understand Ottoman psychology and culture.
