Original press photo of the track and field athletics competition at the 24th Summer Olympics in Seoul.

Ulf Timmerman, 25, who carried the GDR team’s banner at the opening ceremony, took the shot put the gold medal on the first day of the athletics competition with a width of 22.47 meters. The athlete from Berlin, who holds the world record of 23.06 meters, immediately took the lead in the Olympic final. In the last attempt he was outdone by Randy Barnes (22.39 meters) ranked second, and the world and European champion Werner Gunther of Switzerland (21.99 meters) was placed third.
