Theriac or theriaca was a medical concoction originally formulated by the Greeks in the 1st century AD. It was an alexipharmic, or antidote against the bites of wild beasts. The theriac made in Venice enjoyed an especially high reputation, and in this picture the banner of the Republic of Venice with the lion of St. Mark is seen on each side of the table.
