Subject: Signing of Agreements
A ceremony for the signing of the bilateral/tripartite agreement was held this morning in the Economic and Social Council Chamber.
The United States acted as a mediator in the negotiations to facilitate the peace process in south-western Africa. The signing of the tripartite agreement between Angola, Cuba, and South Africa, and the bilateral agreement between Angola and Cuba permits the independence of Nambia and the phased withdrawal of Cuban troops from Angola.
Standing and applauding the signing of the agreements at the presiding table from left to right are: General Magnus Malan (South Africa); Minister for Foreign Affairs of South Africa, Roelof Frederick Botha; Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar; Secretary of State George Shultz (United States); Minister for Foreign Affairs of Angola, Alfonso Van Dunem (Mbinda); General Antonio dos Santos Franca (Angola); Minister for Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Isidoro Malmierca Peoli; and General Abelardo Colome Ibarra (Cuba).
