Some 16,400 officers and men from 28 nations make up the United Nations Force in the Congo which is helping to restore order and calm in the country. The main contingents are supplied by 13 countries. The others supply administrative and ancillary units, air force personnel, and staff officers.
Here, Col. Joseph Mobutu, Chief of Staff of Congo Army, is seen addressing a news conference after the Army took power. Col. Mobutu announced his reliance on the United Nations for assistance and his intention to set up a “College des universitaires” for the governance of the country.
