Original Antique Copperplate – Orbis Vetus
***
Antique copper engraved map of the Old World, by Rigobert Bonne, one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century.
“Orbis Vetus” (Latin for “Old World”) generally refers to historical conceptions of the known world, often in contrast to the Orbis Novus (“New World”) after the Age of Exploration. In old maps, Orbis Vetus sometimes labeled the continents known before the discovery of the Americas (Europe, Asia, and Africa).
