Nautical Chart of The Faro or Strait of Messina in the Mediterranean Sea, Italy
***
An interesting nautical chart of the Faro and the Messina Strait in south Italy from the Italian Government chart of 1881. It was originally published in 1889, with large corrections made in 1900 and the latest small correction in 1904. Nautical charts such as this served as navigational aids, thus commonly updated and corrected by hand annotation and/or printed overlay.
Faro in the local dialect means ‘lighthouse’, and that’s what this place was most famous for; the ancient lighthouse would guide sailors through the Strait of Messina between mainland Italy and Sicily.
