Scheuchzer Physica Sacra Rhino Tab 313
***
Johann Jakob Scheuchzer (2 August 1672 – 23 June 1733) was a Swiss physician and natural scientist from Zürich. He is best known for his significant work, Physica Sacra, spanning four volumes, which combined biblical commentary with his perspective on the natural world, showcasing a harmonious blend of scientific inquiry and religious interpretation.
This is one of many illustrations from this work, which quickly became famous as the Kupfer-Bibel or “Copper Bible.”
Numbers 23:22 “God hath brought him out of Egypt, whose strength is like to the rhinoceros.”
Description:Â Numbers 23:22, the verse is part of Balaam’s prophecy about Israel. Balaam describes God’s power in delivering Israel from Egypt and compares Israel’s strength, granted by God, to that of a mighty animal. The King James Version uses “unicorn,” a term that in ancient times referred to a strong, horned animal, possibly the rhinoceros or an extinct wild ox like the aurochs. This comparison emphasizes the great power and strength that God has endowed upon Israel, showcasing His divine support and protection.
