Scheuchzer Physica Sacra Leviticus Print
***
Johann Jakob Scheuchzer (2 August 1672 – 23 June 1733) was a Swiss physician and natural scientist from Zürich. He is best known for his significant work, Physica Sacra, spanning four volumes, which combined biblical commentary with his perspective on the natural world, showcasing a harmonious blend of scientific inquiry and religious interpretation.
This is one of many illustrations from this work, which quickly became famous as the Kupfer-Bibel or “Copper Bible.”
Description: In Leviticus 11:9-12, God provides dietary laws to the Israelites concerning aquatic creatures. The verses specify that only creatures in the water with fins and scales are considered clean and permissible to eat. Any water creatures without fins and scales are deemed unclean, and their meat must not be eaten. This distinction underscores the importance of ritual purity and obedience to God’s commandments in the everyday lives of the Israelites.
