LE ROI PÊCHEUR
By Julien Gracq
Librairie José Corti, France, 1948.
(The Fisher King) – In French language
***
The Fisher King is the only play by Louis Poirier (pseud.) Julien Gracq, published in 1948. The play is inspired by the Arthurian myth, particularly the stories about the Grail and the Fisher King. Being close to dark Romanticism and the surrealist movement, Gracq’s literary works were noted for their dreamlike abstraction, elegant style, and refined vocabulary.
The copy contains a foreword by the author, reflecting on the history of the French dramatic literature and taking a closer look at the Arthurian legend and the medieval myths, in particular, that of the Holy Grail. This foreword is also a good reflection of the literary zeitgeist.
