About the book
This significant compilation of Slovak spiritual lyrics was first edited in 1636 in Levoča by Jiri Tranovsky (Tranoscius), a Moravian Evangelic minister pivotal in spreading Lutheran ideas across Slovakia, Moravia, and Silesia. His most renowned work, Cithara Sanctorum (“Lyre of the Saints”), was written in Czech and published in 1636 in Levoča (Lőcse). This volume has served as the foundation for Czech and Slovak Lutheran hymnody to this day. Třanovský’s hymnbook and the Bible of Kralice (also in Czech) became cornerstones of the Slovak Reformation.
Due to its popularity and enduring influence, Cithara Sanctorum has been reprinted numerous times and continues to be used in Czech Protestant worship today.
