Titled in Serbian Cyrillic. Artist: Matija Zlamalik. Signed: Матија Зламалик. Technique: hand painted gouache on cardboard. Date: 1944. Dimensions: 72,5 x 102 cm. Condition: As shown on the pictures. Minor traces of handling, a very little timeworn, few minor tears on the left of which just one a little affecting image, barely visible pinholes on margins, small dog ears on angles. Paint traces, mostly on margins and on the back side. In general, very good to excellent condition for this kind of work. Very sticking, nicer than shown on the pictures. Provenance: from estate of the artist (Matija Zlamalik). A historically important and superb example of social realism design. Painted in honor of the liberation of Belgrade in World War II. Occupied Belgrade was liberated from the Germans after the offensive, which was carried out by Russian – Soviet Red Army troops and Serbian partisan units. Painting symbolizes the traditional Serbian-Russian friendship. The painting shows the flags of USSR and Yugoslavia, Kalemegdan fortress, a symbol of Belgrade and broken occupying chains. According to the previous owner (successor to M. Z.) – this is the earliest post-war work in the style of social realism that is used for printing of a propaganda poster.
Zlamalik Matija (1905-1965) The most prominent artist of socialistic realism in the Yugoslav applied arts. Painter, graphic artist, cartoonist, designer notes and postage stamps. His particular contribution is reflected in the field of applied art – in the design of banknotes, posters, emblems, and the most of Yugoslav postage stamps. In the year 1960. American Life magazine named his design of a Yugoslav postal stamp for the best in the world.
