2 vols. Das WEIB in der Natur und Völkerkunde. Anthropologische studien
Author: Dr. Hermann Heinrich PLOSS (1819-1885)
Published in: Leipzig: Grieben, 1891.
In the preface to the first edition of the book, the author explains that the work is a result of many years of study on the natural history of women, from an ethnological perspective. The author acknowledges the difficulty of such a task and explains that the book is meant to present the available material in a scientific way to a receptive audience. The author examines the psychological, ethical, and aesthetic traits of women, as well as their physiological functions and sexual relations. The book also describes the social situation of women throughout the cultural development of the human race. The author discusses scientific problems and the research method used in anthropology to explain phenomena in the life of nations. The author warns against the eager imagination and stresses the importance of caution when assessing individual opinions. Finally, the author clarifies that the book does not attempt to solve the “women’s question” but rather to present the natural and cultural history of women from a scientific perspective.
